5TH GLOBAL DISCOURSE, 2014 KUALA LUMPUR
Zero Waste is a new way of looking at waste stream and philosophy that aims to guide people in the redesign of their resource-use system for reducing waste to zero. Instead of seeing used materials as waste in need of disposal, discards are seen as valuable resources. A pile of “trash” represents jobs, financial opportunity and raw material for new products. The concept of Zero Waste is an idea that is not “burn”, “landfill” and “recycling of anything” for waste, but instead using the waste for other economic activity.
The 5th WIEF-UiTM Global Discourse focused on the management of zero waste and the interdisciplinary nature of the researches and the cutting edge R&D in this field. The Keynote Address looked at how hydrogen produced from agro-industrial waste stream could help contribute to a more sustainable society.
The ensuing panel discussion also examined other aspects waste management, the opportunities and potential in the management of zero waste and its impact on environment and society as well as future development in this important field.
The Global Discourse also address the Islamic perspective on the use of natural resources for consumption and profit as well as the balance between human society and the natural environment.
