KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s success in Islamic finance is a model for other countries in the world, World Islamic Economic Forum Foundation (WIEF Foundation) managing director Datuk Syed Abu Bakar S Mohsin Almohdzar said.

He credited the achievement to the unique structure of Islamic finance in Malaysia that is governed by Bank Negara, which sets it apart from other countries.

“Malaysia has been looked at as the forefront and also the success story regarding Islamic finance because Islamic finance in this country is structured under Bank Negara unlike elsewhere … under the purview of the central bank,” he said during 14th World Islamic Economic Forum press conference today.

The 14th edition, to be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, is themed “Global Economic Agenda: Shaping a Sustainable Future” on Feb 6 to 8 2024.

The forum will focus on shaping a sustainable future by addressing key challenges, exploring new opportunities, and showcasing the latest innovative strategies and solutions to drive socio-economic development.

“Previously, the forum extensively discussed Islamic finance. Now, we have a topic related to Islamic finance, but we are also discussing sustainability and the environment. We must adapt to the times, but we never forget Islamic finance is the main component of the Malaysian economy and the success story is here,“ he said.

WIEF Foundation chairman Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar similarly stated, “WIEF pioneered the platform to discuss on Islamic finance and banking as well as Waqaf which are all issues of importance. There will be a follow-through to that,” he added.

He said the forum is also an opportunity for Malaysia to go on a global stage to explain about Malaysia’s Economic Madani policy.

“When talking about the Madani Economy, this is an opportunity for us to explain it all, because the people who will be attending are from the government, business leaders.

“We have workshops and also networking. Various ministries will be participating. It will provide a platform for us to communicate, explain, and also to create and establish better understanding of what Malaysia can offer,” Syed Hamid added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) — The 14th World Islamic Economic Forum (14th WIEF) in February next year can be a crucial platform for Malaysia to showcase the country’s Madani economic concept to the Islamic world.

WIEF Foundation chairman Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Albar said it is therefore an opportune time for Malaysia to network with leaders, governments and corporate entities to convey Malaysia’s investment policies and its commitment towards building a more sustainable Islamic economy.

At a press conference today, he said the upcoming WIEF in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is expected to attract 3,000 global participants from 80 countries, with 50 corporate leaders likely to take part.

“To boost investments, we need to show to the world that we are back on track and we have very good investment policies,” he said.

He added that Abu Dhabi’s global status enables networking with policymakers and thought leaders, offering opportunities for collaborations and investments that amplify WIEF’s global impact.

Abu Dhabi is also a key financial hub and the 14th WIEF is set to attract major Islamic institutions and corporates.

WIEF Foundation managing director Datuk Syed Abu Bakar S. Mohsin Almohdzar said Malaysia has always been seen as being at the forefront of and a success story in Islamic finance.

The 14th WIEF, to be held from Feb 6 to 8, 2024, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, aims to strengthen and foster strategic alliance via the exchange of knowledge to improve economic prosperity as well as boost trade and business opportunities among the Islamic economies and worldwide.

The latest edition of WIEF will put an emphasis on environmental, social and governance (ESG), which shares similar ethics as Islamic principles, valuing business and social impact while avoiding unethical practices.

The World Islamic Economic Forum will be held in 2024 in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, according to the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED).

The World Islamic Economic Gathering (WIEF), established in 2005 by the WIEF Foundation, is a global economic forum designed to promote and discuss the most recent economic trends and advancements while igniting Islamic virtues of peace, justice, and equality. Government representatives, academics, and corporate executives from all around the world may better communicate with each other and exchange ideas and knowledge thanks to the Forum.

At the 14th WIEF Forum, which will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) from January 15–17, 2024, President Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa and WIEF Foundation President Dr. Tan Sri Saeed Hamid Allah signed an agreement to host the event. The ADNEC Group and the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Culture and Tourism both attended the signing event.

According to S&P Global Ratings, the economic recovery in important Islamic financial markets and increased issuance of Islamic bonds will cause the $2.2 trillion global Islamic finance industry to rise by 10% to 12% over 2021–2022.

According to the Global Islamic Economic Report 2022, there was spending of USD2 trillion in 2021 across food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, fashion, travel, and media/recreation sectors while the Islamic economy sectors, excluding finance, are expected to grow by 9.1 per cent in 2022.

The USD2.2 trillion global Islamic finance industry is expected to grow 10 to 12 per cent from 2021 to 2022 due to increased Islamic bond issuance and economic recovery in the main Islamic finance markets, according to S&P Global Ratings.

Dr Syed said, “Approximately 3,000 participants from over 80 countries are expected to attend the forum in Abu Dhabi in 2024 including heads of governments, senior officials, opinion and business leaders, experts, and academics.
