Financial Inclusion for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals; the Role of Islamic Finance

SDGs 10 and 16 respectively called on countries to “reduce inequality” and “promote peaceful and inclusive societies …” In pursuit of these twin goals, countries need to expand access of their citizens to financial services to achieve much desired financial inclusion. The 2014 Global Financial Development Report (GFDR) found that more than half of the world’s adult population does not have an account with a formal financial institution due to various reasons. However, it noted that Islamic banking is positively related to financial inclusion.
