AIFC (Astana International Financial Center) is hosting the 14th edition of WIEF (World Islamic Economic Forum) in conjunction with its presentation and the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s capital.
Astana, 14 March 2018 – AIFC (Astana International Financial Center) and WIEF (World Islamic Economic Forum) Foundation have sealed agreements today to hold the 14th WIEF on 4th July, 2018 at the EXPO Congress Centre in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Representatives at the agreement signing ceremony are Mr Kairat Kelimbetov, Governor of Astana International Finance Center, Tun Musa Hitam, Chairman of the WIEF Foundation, Mr Kairat Aitekenov, Deputy CEO of the AIFC Authority (AIFCA) and Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad Fuzi Haji Abdul Razak, Secretary General of the WIEF Foundation.
“We are delighted to be the host for WIEF’s 14th edition. Cooperation with WIEF Foundation can be very productive and assist AIFC to continuously strengthen our role in the development of the financial market in Kazakhstan,” said Mr Kairat Kelimbetov, Governor of Astana International Financial Centre.
According to the 2017 Islamic Finance Development Report by Thomson Reuters, the Islamic finance industry will continue to flourish and is predicted to reach USD3.8 trillion by 2022, from USD2.2 trillion at the end of 2016.
“Kazakhstan has entered a new phase of development after a period of high economic growth. Diversification of economy, better management of the accumulated funds and assets, as well as the development of a financial services market have become increasingly important,” said Tun Musa Hitam, Chairman of WIEF Foundation.
“WIEF Foundation is pleased to collaborate with the AIFC which recognises the important role of the WIEF in promoting cross border partnership for the well-being of the global community, following successful forums being held in Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Kuwait, Pakistan, the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates” Tun Musa Hitam added.
The 14th WIEF programme would focus primarily on areas revolving around Islamic Finance and Banking, and current economic issues.
The Forum expects to attract attendees, leaders, role players and media from Central Asia, Middle East, Southern Asia and beyond. The 14th WIEF will provide a global platform for industry leaders to share their thoughts and insights on promoting growth towards an inclusive and resilient future by creating a more sustainable and forward looking global business landscape.

In December 2015 President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the Constitutional law “On the Astana International Financial Centre” (AIFC). The aim of the AIFC is to form a leading international centre of financial services. For the first time in post-Soviet Region Common law framework is introduced in the AIFC. English is the official language of the AIFC.
The objectives of the AIFC are to attract investment into the economy through the establishment of an attractive environment for investment in the financial services, to develop local capital markets, to ensure their integration with the international capital market, and to develop markets for insurance and banking services and for Islamic financing in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
