Born in Wonosobo, a mountain city in north of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Ismail studied traditional music and communication studies before falling in love with filmmaking. He studied about films before participating in international programmes such as the Asian Film Academy in South Korea and Berlinale Talent Campus in Germany.
From 2008, he began producing and directing ten short films which were highlighted in the film festival circuit around the world before making feature-films. He released three films in about one year ‘Another Trip To The Moon’ (2015), his first feature-film nominated for HIVOS-Tiger Award and NETPAC Award of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2015. His second feature, ‘Mencari Hilal’ (2015) was nominated for Asian Future Award at Tokyo International Film Festival 2015 and also nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director at Indonesian Film Festival 2015 and won the award for Best Actor. His third film, ‘Talak’ 3 (2016) is commercially successful in Indonesia and gained outstanding reputation from mainstream media and film critics.
He is a producer and Co-Founder of Hide Project Films, an independent production house which focus on how to make films that offer alternatives stories, themes, and techniques based on Indonesian and Asian market interest. He is also the creative director and Co-Founder of Bosan Berisik Lab, a creative-laboratory, it’s working platform is based on networking, sharing knowledge and information among young filmmakers and artists to empower them on making creative and experimental works. He is also one of the programmer and Co-Founders of Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting and highlighting the development of Asian cinema and screens it in the cultural city Yogyakarta, Indonesia annually.
