The Cooler Lumpur Festival is Kuala Lumpur’s annual multidisciplinary celebration of culture. The theme for 2013 is #Word, celebrating the written and spoken word in all its forms.
‘Translations’ by MOCAfest explored the significance of classical poetry from the Muslim world in its original context as well as its modern relevance. It featured the poetry of Mevlana Jalaladdin Rumi presented by Prof. Dr. Walid Faris and re-interpreted by guest artists: Jamal raslan, Zuklifli Ramli, Joel Cerdor, Kalpana paranjothy and Muadz. Prof. Dr. Waleed Fekry Faris is the Director of International Institute for Muslim Unity (IIMU) of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
The event also constituted a community dialogue session for the attendees following the poetry and artistic renditions and ‘translations’ around the modern and universal relevance of the poetry. The two hour event held at Black Box MAP @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur provided a platform for expression, interpretation and modern take on the values and concept of monotheism which was the theme of Rumi’s thought.
One of the attendees, Hammam Radwan from Jordan shared, “It has been very enlightening being able to relate my own interpretations with the renditions of others and most importantly how I realized its context to modern life specially being a youth of today”.
Since its inception, The WYN has launched a series of empowerment programmes such as the MOCA Fest (Marketplace of Creative Arts), WIEF Internship and thinkTALK.
